. Lt. Cmdr. Adonudo Tlanuwa was a Medicine Man. A trained healer, mystic, and shaman from Dorvan V, whose people were descended from the indigenous peoples of the continent of North America on Earth, and who honored that heritage and their closeness to the earth (or whatever planet they were on) and the spirits.
. While he'd also undergone the necessary training in Starfleet Academy to be accredited as a member of Starfleet's Medical Corps and a certified Counselor, he was first a Medicine Man, and that came with a Spirit Guide, and Adon's was Hawk.
. Hawk was a spirit of vision and insight, a Messenger from the Spirit Realm. One chosen by Hawk was said to be gifted and was often sought out by those having to make important decisions. And now, Adon's Captain, Ravynn Phoenix, needed to make some important decisions!
. But, the visions that Hawk brought to Adon were not always clear. They were often veiled in symbolism that Adon would have to interpret. The many years of living with his Spirit Guide had helped to train Adon in interpreting the visions, most of the time, but some other visions just left him puzzled - until too late.
. This time, as Adon sat in the Counselor's chair aboard the new Roddenberry-A, the visions came in waves. As usual, it began flying with Hawk high in the sky. Adon could almost feel the wind through his hair. Hawk glanced over at Adon and the Medicine Man noticed Hawk's eyes were glistening gemstones, sparkling in the sunlight. That sort of made sense. They had determined they needed tanzanite crystals to help power the strange devices that had brought them to this weird "ghost dimension".
. But, the sparkling gemstones dimmed as Hawk tucked in his wings and dived. Adon dived with him, but was surprised to feel they were diving much too slow. He'd flown with Hawk in these visions many, many times over the years and always exhilarated at the speed of the Hawk's dives. This time, it felt as though he were flying through water ... or even some thick syrup or sap! It was too slow, much too slow.
. And then, the first vision ended as the ship began to shake slightly as it entered the gravity wake of the wormhole they were using for cover from the Klingons. Adon grabbed his forehead and reported, "Hawk said we'll need more. It's just not enough. Um ... I think."
. Needing more information, Adon focused, trying to reconnect with the Spirit Guide. The Spirits were often stubborn and didn't always respond when requested, but Hawk came and Adon saw another vision. Hawk was diving after fish. He grabbed one in his talons and beat his wings strongly to rise again as the ship rattled once again from the gravity waves and Adon's vision broke once more. Adon mused, "Fish? No, not fish .... fish eggs? No, that's not it ....... fish ... OIL!"
. Ens. Laurel Lance was watching Adon and asked about Hawk and Adon's visions. She tried to help the Medicine Man interpret what he'd seen, but then Lt. Cmdr. Kai Makorie said that there was something about the DNA of their Chief of Security, Cmdr. Magnus Morgensen, and another vision hit Adon, but this one was different.
. Hawk flew over a battlefield. The sun had set below the western horizon but there was still a faint glow casting enough light for a Hawk's vision. Adon knew it was a battlefield because there were bodies everywhere, hundreds of them. Some bodies were impaled on long spears that had been mounted in the ground! There was blood everywhere. Adon gasped, "No! So much ... blood!"
. Now Adon was left reeling, trying to put the pieces together. Gemstone eyes, these were obviously the tanzanite that allowed the devices to "see" and allowed the devices' "spirits" to access the world around them. Fish oil was composed of eicosanoids, molecules that helped transmit signals between enzymes, and helped with cardiovascular flow. Which brought him to the blood ... that was where Adon lost the interpretation. Why blood? Why so much of it? Why were bodies impaled in such a horrific manner?
