Mission:
Where do we go from here?
Location: probe storage area
USS Roddenberry

Laurel looked over to Core as he walked with her towards the probe storage area. "We'll need to work fast, Dimitri. The Captain has given us several modifications she wants on these probes." The door swished open and she headed for the rack of probes.
"What are the modifications?" As Core looks at his padd to see if it's still recording and puts it back in his pocket. Then looks up at Laurel for a answer.
Laurel ran her fingers over the controls that placed four probes on a table. "Well, the modified payload will include a micro-tonic EM buffer and a modulated shield harmonic. And if I recall we'll need to boost telemetry and modify propulsion. I think that was everything, But I am quite certain you have those requests on that PADD of yours." She smiled over at Core, knowing he was capable of getting that information as well.
Core gets out the Em buffer he had in the tools he brought down and gives it a look over. Puts into the first probe and starts doing the next one, without input from Laurel. "Most efficient, and I love it keeps this ship running better." Puts his finger on one of four black dots in his pocket and then puts in the next EM buffer.
Laurel looked over what Dimitri was doing, "Make sure those can handle micro-tonic EM pulses." She stopped a moment as she looked at the best way to boost telemetry from the probe. "You were working on an algorithm for shield harmonics, weren't you? Did you have any success with it, because that's what we need here too."
"Had some success but not enough to use it. Needs more work before I fully bring it to Smoke."Core said quickly then asked, "So did you get the modify propulsion yet?" Looking to improve the propulsion while looking at his shield harmonics.
Laurel frowned, "I think this will be a good chance to test that idea." She said as she began to modify the first probe's propulsion to make room for a signal booster for the telemtry. She looked up for a second, pausing to think.
"Dimitri, what have you got that can boost the signal too?" Laurel didn't know if he'd worked on anything like that, but since he liked to keep things close to the chest, it was worth a shot to ask.
"I don't what if it fully doesn't work, lose a probe, lose sensor profit." Dimitri stated, trying to think if Laurel knows what he means.
"We can try but needs work, made a nano scanner and hoping it improves resolution and a class Iv stellar probe into a class 1 hopefully. Along with improving the EM wide band frequencies to what the sensors can't see. The propulsion is a work in progress too. Putting in a phase algorithm to hopefully phase the probe to anything coming out of it. " Dimitri looks nervous and scared for the info he just said. No profit to be earned by Chief or Captain now.
Laurel smiled, "You are quite an intelligent engineer, Ensign Dimitri Core. The Roddy is damn lucky to have you. And if it doesn't work, well, then you'll have something to work with. As for losing sensor... profit? The longer we can keep the probe working, the more sensor data we gain. So tell me how this will work."
Looking very nervous, Dimitri spoke. "I might be intelligent, but but nervous about telling." Gulps and rubs his left lobe. "It it works by using the nano scanner as a lead Em wide band to infiltrate the bands the sensors can't see but then put that into data we can work with Using a program I made in solitary study time. Haven't fully tried it yet." Looks at Laurel shaking a little.
Laurel nodded, impressed with his ingenuity. "Let's consider this the first practical test of your project. Even if it does not work completely there is profit in finding the flaws, do you agree?"
Core Nodded his head. "Yes, that's what my instructors said. I have more ingenuity along with some brains but still haven't seen it. Plus have you heard of a inter dimensional travel. Overheard a instructor mention it. So I use a algorithm to try to see it with sensors."
Laurel raised an eyebrow, "There have been many stories over the years of vessels traveling to other dimensions." She went back to work on the probes, adding not one but two signal boosters to each. "You know, I think if anyone can figure that out, It will be you. Do you know why?"
Dimitri shakes his head no. "Why?" Then goes to each console of the probe to put in the inter dimensional algorithm and put the one with the nano scanner that looks like a dot and over the EM buffer as a small power source. "Well that was fast getting that in."
Then looks at Laurel. " I don't think I am that smart, just love solving problems."
Laurel chuckled, "And that is it in a nutshell, Core. You don't accept that it can't be solved. You continue to search for the solution.. or should I say the profit of finding the answers that others have given up looking for." Laurel placed a hand on his shoulder gently, "Just because you may not think you are that smart, doesn't mean it's true."
"Yes, but sometimes my profit doesn't go like I wanted. Example, my Klingon friend and I in the academy made a EPS conduit that was supposed to increase speed in slipstream and it ended up destroying the holodeck." Dimitri continues working while talking.
"Then got into so much trouble I had to promise not to do that again unless I run it by a instructor. I took the blame and then me and the Klingon took to a battle sim that him and me worked on in Tactical training class."
Laurel smiled, "Even in failure there is profit. You learned something important that day. Not everything will work the way we want it too. And sometimes, even those things we think are reliable, like a holodeck, can fail as well. But today, failure is a risk we're going to have to take. And I'll take the blame if it does not go the way we want it to."
Laurel finished adjusting the remaining probes propulsion and telemetry as she spoke, "While I was at the academy, I tried my best to do everything perfectly. I mean textbook perfect. Well, little did I know that being just like the book was not exactly the best move. I nearly didn't pass my first semester until one of the instructors pointed out that a good engineer need to think outside the box, not just follow it."
"My problem in the academy was I tried to make profit and kept to the Ferengi code and only used the book as a guideline. Hence why I was trying to keep a business in my first few weeks and it didn't work and a instructor said "Keep your heart where it is, but instead of thinking profit for your business, think of it for you and Starfleet." Good words that I ever heard, and he was a Vulcan." Core shakes his head as he puts safeties on his nano sensor to stop in case of trouble while talking and making sure that Laurel is looking at his face when he is doing it. He does know the safe works.
Laurel nodded, "The best advice comes from the strangest places sometimes, doesn't it?" She smiled as she stepped back and looked at the probes. "Well, if this works, I am giving you the credit, if it doesn't, I will take the blame. Understood?"
"Yes, Ma'am." Dimitri salutes her then puts his arm down and continues working.
Laurel smiled then began to inspect their work. She made her way down the line to the last probe just as Core finished. "Once we check this last one, I'll inform Smoke the probes are ready. "
"What do you think of the Chief?" Core asked, going behind Laurel to make sure everything he put on the algorithm is correct. "Think probes are ready to go." Also puts in a shield algorithm to change frequencies depending on nano sensors scanning."Put also my shield algorithm that links to my nano sensors. On my last pass." Stops as he is finishing the last one and looks at Laurel.
Laurel nodded, "Good thinking. And I think the Chief is doing her darnedest not to get to close. She's nice and I trust her judgment. But I get the feeling she'd be a lot happier in a different position. But what I think of her doesn't really matter, now, does it. She's the chief, and we are both just ensigns." She looked over at Core and nodded, "Let’s go tell the Chief we are done."
