Joint Duty Log: Finding and Fixing Lt. D’Vana Xavier
By: Capt. Avri Byrd, Lt. Thea Queen, Lt. Cmdr. Toulaine, and Lt. Muffy Harrington

Making a scan, I noticed that there had been a power fluctuation in the holodeck. I turn towards the captain, "Ma'am there was a power fluctuation in Holodeck 1 and Lt. D'Vana's bio readings are registering in the same location," Thea reported from her Ops station.

“What are you picking up from her?”  Avri stood up waiting to see if she needed to go there herself.  This was not like D’Vana to either not be at her station or in SEC.  Since the prisoners came on board, the Captain had thought she was down there with them.

Thea’s fingers move over the console, “From these scans, power is no longer being diverted to the Holodeck, I’ve done a bio sweep her the radon particles from the radiation leak we had are elevated, but either she’s unconscious or something has weakened her heart rate,” Thea reported to the captain.d

“Dammit,” Avri muttered under her breath.  ++Toulaine++  "I need you to take a team to Holodeck 1.  Lt. Xavier is in distress.  I want a report the moment you get there and one following your assessment."

Toulaine heard and sighed.  ++Avri++  "On my way, Captain.”  She then turned to Doctor Morgan.  “You have sickbay for now.  Nurse Charles and Nurse Elaine, I need you with me, now.  Bring the emergency medical kits.”  She then stood and started limping for the door and was met there by the two nurses and the three of them headed to holodeck 1.  It took a couple of minutes to navigate there, but Toulaine was moving as fast as she could.  When she got there, she found the door locked and used her medical authority to break the lock and enter.  “Inside she found the lieutenant on the floor, part of the bulkheads looked like they had been broken through with a jackhammer and she could feel the power in the air.  “Okay, looks like she decided to redecorate down here.  Be careful of what you touch or you will be shocked.”  ++Avri++  “We are here.  It appears she wanted to redecorate the holodeck and put her hand and arm through the wrong wall.  We are going to stabilize her as soon as we can control the power that is causing what was once called static electricity.”

Hearing Toulaine’s report she immediately told engineering to cut the power to holodeck 1.  ++Toulaine++  Doc, power is off, do a site-to-site transport and let me know as soon as you have a full assessment.  ++Muffy++  Lieutenant where are you with the radiation retraction from the ship?

Muffy looked up from the scope she was looking through at the call.  ++Avri++  “Captain, I have already given the solution to Doctor Toulaine, and I believe she has started the treatment.  It’s something she is putting in the air so that everyone will get the needed dosage.  I am still working on how they have altered the base Radon to help them; and destroy who they consider enemies.  I have found that the radiation turns their weapons almost a thousand percent more deadly.  Anything else I can help with?”

Toulaine had her nurses move in close and she used the site-to-site beam out to take them directly into the ICU unit of sickbay with D’Vana on the biobed.  “Okay team, let’s get answers for the Captain and make sure that I get the chance to tell D’Vana exactly what I think of her redecorating ideas.”

While Captain Avri Byrd was having her discussion with Toulaine and Muffy, Thea continued to run scans on the the holodeck bringing up the list of programs that had currently been used. "Captain, Lt. Xavier was running one of Commander Worf's Meditation programs, but it would seem she altered it," Thea paused, "She added painsticks, and she also turned off the safeties..." Thea reported with a frown.

Avri just shook her head.  “I will deal with this once we get her back on her feet.  In the meantime get engineering in there to make the necessary repairs.  We have enough that being down one holodeck for a few days won’t be a big deal. Thank you”

Toulaine got to work, scanning and reading what was going on with the half Klingon, and sighed.  The diluted air distribution of cure for the radiation causes irrational anger and violence.  She reached into her pocket and took out a special hypo. She looked at it for a moment and then looked at D’Vana and adjusted it slightly and then pressed it against her jugular vein and emptied the small vial attached to it...  Then she looked at the readings again.  The signs of the radiation were fleeing the attack of the medication that was now pumping through the woman’s veins.  Then she gave the second hypo, the standard radiation cure.  “Okay, she should be waking up soon, be ready in case there are still residual effects.”  She told her nurses and Charles was ready to hold her down if needed and Elaine was ready with another hypo that would put her to sleep again if needed.

D’Vana groaned, her eyes slow to open, she raised one arm to touch her forehead with her hand. Even before her eyes opened though she could tell she wasn’t still in the holodeck, not unless the floors turned to cushions. “Where am I?” She asked in a slightly raspy voice since her throat was dry. Thankfully, she didn’t feel angry anymore. That was getting exhausting.

Toulaine nodded to Elaine to get some water for D’Vana.  “You, young lady, are in sickbay.”  She said in her soft voice that most of those who worked in sickbay didn’t like to hear.  “Next time you feel the need to redecorate the holodeck, I suggest you consult with engineering and not try to do it yourself by sheer force.  How do you feel right now?  And do you know your name?”  Elaine gave her the water and stood aside for Toulaine to do her thing.

Taking the water with a nod and a slight smile, she took a sip before answering, “Lt. D’Vana Xavier Service Number DX34582, Security Chief of the USS Roddenberry. As to redecorating the holodeck, that wasn’t exactly the plan. I was running a Klingon meditation program with Commander Worf. Unfortunately, I required painstiks because meditation alone didn’t help with the constant anger I felt, He wasn’t inclined to agree to painstiks until I turned off the safeties.” D’Vana explained before taking another drink.

Toulaine’s voice dropped to an even more quiet volume, so unless you listened really carefully, you missed half of what she was saying and yet you could hear each and every word.  “Lieutenant, safeties are placed on the holodeck for this very reason.  You are not meant to receive injuries while in the holodeck.  But there are those who believe they are above the rules and regulations when it comes to the holodecks for the adrenaline rush.  Next time you want to harm yourself, I would suggest you use Commander Worf’s workout program, rather than his meditation program, as his workout program is filled with enough punishment to make even a full-blooded Klingon beg for mercy before it is half over.  No more turning off the safeties.  Do I make myself clear?”

D’Vana took another drink from the water. She was listening very carefully to the doctor, she normally agreed with everything the woman said, having forgotten about the workout program. “Honestly Doc, if I was in my right mind, I don’t think I would have touched the safeties, I normally don’t. I’m a firm believer that the safeties are there for a reason,” D’Vana sighed, “I actually enjoy Commander Worf’s Workout programs. Dad used to run them with us when we were kids, But you make yourself crystal clear. I have no doubt that I’ll get another well-earned lecture from the Captain as well,” D’Vana sighed, finishing off the water and looking at the glass wishing she had more.

Toulaine looked carefully at D’Vana.  “I have a question for you, Lieutenant.  Why do you think I am so angry when someone comes in or is brought into sickbay for turning off the safeties on the holodeck?”  Her voice was again quiet, but not as quiet as before and Charles looked at her, hearing emotion that rarely ever touched her voice.  Elaine took the glass; refilled it and handed it back to D’Vana, watching her look at the glass forlornly as if she wished she had more.
“Because Doctor, there’s the risk of severe injury, not to mention possible death, both are unnecessary if the safeties are left alone to protect us. You’d rather we stop doing the dumb than come in here to you for doing the dumb,” D’Vana said softly having heard the emotion in the Doc’s voice as well. Toulaine is a rarity in the medical world these days, there are some doctors out there who no longer care or depending on their race harder on their patients than necessary.

“The Captain is in charge of the entire ship and crew, so he or she wants to make sure that everyone survives on away teams and in space battles and such.  But I am the one who has to put together those who are injured or worse.  Let me assure you, I feel every one of those deaths personally and it is something I understand can’t be avoided in our jobs and living on this ship.  However, rec time in the holodeck isn’t part of the dangers that can face those on the ship, crew, or civilian, unless the safeties are turned off.  That is a reckless waste of health, life, and time.”  Toulaine said softly.  “If you ever feel out of control again, come and see me.  I have things that will help you with that.  I do understand having a rage inside of you that you can’t do anything about but you can’t let it take over your life and ruin your job and personal relationships such as friendships and more.”  She looked at the readings.  “You are put back together, Humpty Dumpty, when you feel ready, you may return to duty.  I will leave it to you to talk to the Captain.  But I will be telling her that you are going to be returning to duty within the hour.”  She nodded to D’Vana and waved to Elaine to continue to help D’Vana and to Charles to return to his normal duties in sickbay.

Elaine sighed when Doctor Toulaine left the room.  “She is very intense about things, but she is right, she does care and when someone dies, she blames herself for it.  Anyway, what else would you like?  More water, something to eat, a clean uniform, and a shower.”  Not really saying that when she was electrocuted, she lost control of her bowels as everyone does and that she might like to clean up before returning to duty.

D’Vana shook her head draining the second glass. “Thank you but no, I do understand how she feels, usually my anger issues are well under lock and key,” D’Vana sighed, “when a life is lost I feel it too in a different way, especially if it’s someone from my own department,” She shook her head again, “I probably should get back to duty, I have no doubt I need to face the music with the captain next. This Humpty Dumpty is thankful to be put back together. Hopefully, I won't fall off any more walls and fall to pieces again,” D’Vana moved to get off the bio-bed.

Elaine smiled; and nodded and took the glass.  “Then I wish you well, and have a good rest of your day.”  She then pointed out the way from the ICU to the main sick bay and out to the corridor.  She then went and knocked softly on Doctor Toulaine’s door and was told to enter.  “She has left for her duty. Doctor.”

Toulaine nodded.  “Thank you, Elaine.  You can return to your normal duties.  I need to finish this report.”  When Elaine was gone, Toulaine reported in.  ++Avri++ “Captain, Lieutenant Xavier is returning to duty now.  Her signs are stable and she is back in control of herself so she won’t be punching holes in the walls anymore.”

Avri gave a small sigh of relief and was thankful for the report.  ++Toulaine ++  “Thank you Doc for making this quick.  I’m glad it was fairly easy to deal with.  I will talk to her before the end of the shift after I read your full report.”

Toulaine nodded to herself.  ++Avri++  “You will have the completed report in 20 minutes.  I am almost done with it now.  You should also know that Lieutenant Edwards is recovering nicely and after he is finished with T’Kaia, he should be able to return to duty.”

++Toulaine++  “Very good.  It will be nice to have everyone and everything back as it should be.”  With a small smile, she gave a self-approval nod to her crew and their diligence.
