Joint Duty Log: Reporting the Tests Findings (Pt. 1)
By: Lt. Felicity Storm, Ens. Thea Queen, and Ens. Laurel Lance
Thea and Laurel returned to Engineering after their test on the algorithm with promising results. Thea made her way over to the Chief's office again and hit the chime by the door for access.
Laurel stood just behind Thea, this was her discovery and she would not take any credit.
The door wasn't even closed right now, but the chime just in case was always a good thing sometimes. Giving a glance up and motioning with a hand.
Thea made her way into the room and placed the PADD on the desktop. "Ens. Laurel Lance and I ran a few holographic simulations on the shield modifications I want to implement. It's a good thing we did because the Suliban Ships have red matter cores and have a gravitational pull that will pull at the refractive shielding. with an opposite polarization we've managed to fix that problem and successfully traveled alongside a suliban ship without being noticed at all," Thea explained to Felicity.
Laurel made her way into the office but stayed back to allow Thea to explain her findings. If this worked as well as it did in the simulation, it could be their ticket home. And Thea deserved the recognition for all the work, all Laurel had done was watch for the most part.
Felicity reached for the PADD while she listened. "Okay," still reading it through, then setting it down. "Did you two account for the spacial particulates? As we move in space there are still things like that. That's why our Navigational Deflector is set up to move them out of the way and not harm the hull." She had another question or...more of a statement after that. It wasn't like Felicity was shooting down anything, just making sure.
"The deflector and the shield won't work any differently the spacial particulars will still move out of the way and shouldn't cause any issue with the refractive shielding. Or simulation had a slight shield fluctuation but we've already compensated for it." Thea explained proudly.
Laurel thought that would have been a given. but something clicked in her mind at that moment. It was something she would need to look into very carefully. "The only question would be, would the Suliban ships be able to see the movement of particulates? And would the movement of those particulates alone be enough to give us away? "
"It shouldn't but we'll need to keep an eye on it anyway just to be safe."
"Exactly, because they still move them around any given object moving or pushing them out of the way. It's just like shield impacts or a rock into water it makes ripples."
Laurel frowned slightly as she thought, "And the faster the object is moving the larger the ripple."
Thea thought for a moment, thinking about the gravitational push to offset the gravitational pull from the suliban ships. "I don't think it'll be a problem I added a gravitational push as an opposite polarization to the gravitation pull coming from the suliban ships. it should prevent the particulars from even touching the ship."
"It's all very good ideas. I'm not at all shooting them down. We just have to make sure it's perfected, that's all." Nodding, "Right, Laurel." Felicity thought about it a moment. "They always do, even ones that won't do any damage. What we really need is a cloaking manual to explain how they get away with this issue."
Laurel made a derisive snorting sound, "Like any of those cretins would provide us with that information. They still want the advantage."
"Except this isn't a cloak think more along the lines of a prism and light moving through it and refracting back. Or a mirror the particulars shouldn't be a problem." Thea wondered why they kept saying cloak when that's not what she was trying to do with a cloak they'd have to lower the shields to fire refracting shields didn't need to worry about that because it was basically just their normal shields just with the modification to refract the light from the stars around it to sort of camouflage them.
"For all intents and purposes, it is a cloak," Laurel said, "It obfuscates our image and our footprint, so-to-speak, to blind others to our presence."
"Alright fine it's like a cloak, but it's not a cloak that uses a device not the deflector like our shields do which is what the refractive shielding works off of as well our deflector."
Laurel nodded, "Yes but we need to be careful that what we do does not paint a great big green arrow that points directly to us.. or the way home."
"We all know the difference between your idea, and a cloak, Thea. We're just using a term that's relative is all."
"It won't you saw the results for yourself first hand we were invisible to the suliban's sensors we were flying right alongside them and they continued on their own path without attacking us," Thea said logically.
Laurel had seen it, and she had a great deal of faith in Thea's Refractive shielding. But better to play devil's advocate than to not pose questions at all. "I believe it will work, within the parameters of the simulation, and will provide our means of escape. I am just trying to make sure that we have not overlooked anything vital."
"Then look it over again, I don't think I've overlooked anything, we fixed what might have gone wrong in the simulation and it's just a matter now of keeping an on it and making sure that it really won't be affected by the particulars that you seem to be so worried about, but I checked the sensors. which I had added to the report. We were completely hidden." Thea said crossing her arms over her chest. Right about now she was feeling as if she's wasted a lot of time for nothing but it was the chief's call in the end.
Laurel had said her piece, Felicity knew that she approved of the plan. It was in the Chief's hands now.
"I'm just covering our basis, in case. We also have to think on the fly. Did you two run scenarios with variables not expected? Anything can go wrong." Picking up the PADD and holding it out. "Either way, it's still a wonderful idea and we should go with it. So we just need the Captain to sign off on it."
"I had the computer run a simulation-based off of the scans of our last encounter with the suliban that had included a phaser fire. It also explained why the ships were so easily destroyed. the red matter core isn't as stable as a matter/antimatter core." Thea said taking the PADD back. "Do you want me to bring this to the captain? or have the captain come here?"
Felicity reached up and scratched the bridge of her nose. "Actually, why don't we have her meet us in the Holodeck. I'm sure she'd like to see it in action and so would I."
"If you don't need me anymore, Lt Smoke?" Laurel let the question hang, Thea could more than handle the simulation so there was no real need for her to be there.
"Sure, I don't see any problem demonstrating the shield modifications for both of you," Thea said slightly nervous now showing her work to a fellow Ensign wasn't nearly as nerve-racking as showing it to the Captain.
"Ohhh...no. You both worked on it." Felicity grinned.
"Yeah, so you have to help me show them how it works." Thea grinned at Laurel.
Laurel smiled, "Not going to get of it, am I? I just hope Captain Phoenix is really as nice as she seems."
"Nope your not getting out of it," Thea grinned, "She was a little scary when I last met her but then again um I had been in sickbay for reasons." Thea blushed slightly.
"I was afraid of that," Laurel chuckled, "I only see her when I have bridge duty and we don't really...' share' a lot. She orders, I follow."
"Has seemed fine to me. Just, everyone gets under stress." Felicity stood up from the desk. "Let's go ahead and go to the Holodeck and get it set up."
