. LtJG. Laurel Lance and Lt. Nikosh Targus were on an Away Mission. Most of the other team members were involved with talking with the newly-discovered aliens, but Laurel had detected something on her scanners and she and Nikki were intently studying the signal.

. Laurel looked over at Nikki and in her best approximation of his thick Russian-like accent, said, "Ve do see someting, yes?"

. Nikki looked up at her, squinting his beady eyes at her, then gave a slight shrug. "I am getting someting in dat direction." He pointed then continued, "Spikes in ze EM band, yes?"

. Laurel nodded, giving up her fake accent. "There is something, it's not strong but it's there." She glanced over at the male flower-person, Solus. "Perhaps we can convince our host to invite us to their ... community?"

. Nikosh grunted noncommittally. "I am tinking it looks like pulses. Heh, almost like heartbeat and blood, eh?" He showed her his scanner which depicted a bright blob of electromagnetic energy with tendrils stretching out in some kind of network. The blob would pulse and then the "veins" would glow, then dim, before another pulse went through the system. "Vhat does dat, eh?"

. Laurel looked at Targus' readings and frowned, "Well, primitive power systems would have worked something like that. Build up the energy and then send it out. It depends on how advanced their technology is and if it's similar to Earth's historical systems."

. Nikki raised his eyes to look at the Engineer. "But ... ve saw no cities from orbit, no?" He looked back at his scanner, then looked back up in the direction the signature was in, raising a hand to shield his eyes. "Tellarites don't have ze greatest vision. Do you see a city dat vay?"

. Laurel glanced in the direction of the signal, "Honestly, I don't see anything but a forest. But I wonder, if they can disguise themselves can they do that with other objects? Or ... did someone else teach them how to hide?"

. Nikki's eyes cut back to her again. "Hiding? A whole city? If vas hologram it vould make huge blip on EM scanner, yes? Ve are not seeing dat, so ... could ze city be in ze forest? Or ..." he stopped, stroking his beard, then said, "Maybe ze forest IS ze city, no?"

. Laurel raised her eyebrows in question, "I hadn't thought of that, but, considering we thought they were flowers it doesn't seem so far-fetched. Do you think we could ... umm ... take a walk in the woods?"

. Nikki looked at the other members of the Away Team. "Hmph. Nobody paying attention to ze Engineer and Intelligence Officer, eh? Maybe ve just start dat vay and see who notices, eh?" He grinned at her. "Sometimes a man just has to get a voman off by herself, eh?"

. Laurel chuckled, "Or maybe a woman needs to get a man alone." She gave him a wink. "And yes, lets wander in that direction, shall we?"

. Nikki grinned at her around his tusks. "Vhat vould Mr. Juglans think?"

. She grinned back, "That he has competition?"

. And with that, the two wandered off from the rest of the Away Team towards the forest.
